Version 1.0
Issue Date: May 2024

Qualification -
Unit of Competency MEM05042 - Perform welds to code standards using flux core arc welding process
Description
Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to prepare and produce welds to code standards using flux core arc welding (FCAW) and applies to the production of butt and fillet welds in all positions on a range of materials. Welds produced to the standard of this unit would typically conform to AS 1210-2010 Pressure vessels, AS 4041-2006 (R2016) Pressure piping, and American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) IX, or equivalent. This unit, in conjunction with unit MEM05026 Apply welding principles, may satisfy the requirements of AS 1796-2006 (R2016) Certification of welders and welding supervisors, Certificate 8F.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.Band: BUnit Weight: 6

(add new lines for each of the assessment tasks)

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

This field allows for different work environments and conditions that may affect performance. Essential operating conditions that may be present (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) are included.

Routine maintenance includes the following:

ensuring gun, cable and contact tip are in good condition

Preparation includes one (1) or more of the following:

flame cut and ground or machined

pre-heating

setting up of jigs, fixtures, clamps

Materials include (1) one or more of the following:

carbon/manganese steel on plate, pipe and rolled sections

low alloy steel on plate, pipe and rolled steel sections

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.

Observation Checklist
